Damain’s story – A Supporting Living Story

Supported Living

What Damain's story shows what supported living really means

When we think about Damian’s story. We think about housing for those on disability, it’s easy to picture bricks and mortar. But for people with additional needs, a home means far more. It represents safety, support, and a place where they can feel in control of their lives.

One of our tenants in Wigan recently shared his story. His words highlight just how much of a difference the right housing and support can make.

“It gives a whole sense of hope… knowing there’s always someone around to make sure everything’s fine.”

How the Right Housing Creates Stability

Damian has lived in supported accommodation for over five years. During that time, he’s built independence and developed the confidence to manage daily life with the right support.

He has autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. These conditions can make everyday tasks more challenging, but with tailored help, he’s learned how to overcome them.

He receives assistance with:

  • House maintenance

  • Budgeting and bills

  • Reading and understanding paperwork

  • Daily emotional check-ins and wellbeing

The People Behind Damain's story

He credits his staff from Partners Foundation—Tori, Sue, Mark, Sinead, and Claire—for being a constant lifeline, always available when needed. Whether it’s help with bills, moral encouragement, or simply having someone to talk to, this kind of consistent presence has made a life-changing difference.

“Sometimes I just need someone to talk to. Tori checks in and makes sure everything is okay. That support helps me be more positive and face things head-on.”

Why Damain's story Matters More Than Ever

Damian’s story tells us that not all housing is created equal. For those on disability, standard housing may lack the critical resources needed to live independently. That’s why housing for those on disability must be flexible, supportive, and built around the person.

This tenant’s experience shows us that:

  • Housing must include access to real, ongoing support

  • Emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical support

  • Independence grows through confidence—not isolation

“It’s not just about having a place to stay. It’s about being able to live a fuller life, with a brighter future.”

A message for those thinking about housing for those on disability

For anyone unsure whether housing support is right for them, his advice is clear:

“Go for it. Everyone has different needs. But this gives you the help to move forward.”

Accessible and empowering housing isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. It helps people live with dignity, hope, and freedom.

Electrical Safety

We use electricity every day in our home and we sometimes forget how dangerous it can be. Here are some tips to improve safety around your home, it is a good idea to check for these common faults/dangers:

  • Check for frayed or damaged leads
  • Tuck leads safely out of the way and keep them neat and tidy
  • If you have any cracked plugs, sockets and switches report them to us straight away
  • When using bulbs only use ones at or below the maximum wattage
  • Remember water and electricity do not mix – do not unplug or plug things in with wet hands, be careful if you spill water near or over appliances
  • Don’t overload sockets, too many plugs in one socket can be dangerous, overheat and cause fire

If you have any concerns about any of your electric or electrical appliances, please contact us on 01706 759330 or 01706 753678
