This week marks Learning Difficulty Week, a national campaign led by Mencap that shines a much-needed spotlight on the experiences, challenges, and victories of individuals with learning disabilities. The 2025 theme, “Do You See Me,” carries a powerful message asking society to see people with learning difficulties as individuals with strengths, potential, and value. At Partners Foundation, this message couldn’t resonate more deeply.
Why Visibility Matters: Learning Disability Week
For too long, individuals with learning difficulties have been overlooked or underestimated, particularly in professional environments. Learning difficulties in the workplace often come with false assumptions that individuals can’t manage responsibilities, follow instructions, or contribute meaningfully to a team. But stories like Connah’s tell a very different story.
Learning Disability Week: Being Seen and Valued
Connah joined Partners Foundation, starting with simple administrative tasks such as sorting mail and helping with office organisation. Over time, his confidence grew, his skill set expanded, and his independence flourished.
From creating spreadsheets to helping the team craft educational social media content about Down syndrome, Connah has become a shining example of how people with learning difficulties can thrive in the workplace when given the right support and recognition. His contributions have challenged assumptions and changed perceptions not only in our office but among everyone who hears his story.
Breaking Stereotypes during Learning Disability Week
Learning difficulty doesn’t mean inability. What it often means is thinking differently, needing alternative communication styles, or learning in unique ways.
By adapting environments, expectations, and support systems, we make space for people to show what they’re capable of, not limit them based on outdated stereotypes.
Employers, colleagues, and communities must challenge themselves to go beyond appearances and embrace inclusion as more than a checkbox. Inclusion is about ensuring every person is seen, heard, and truly valued.
